Formed in September 2003 as the youngest side in the club?s history with the youngest manager in the league and the club?s history.
A still wet behind the ears Ben Shirley took over the reins of the under 8?s boys team, as they were then, as a newly qualified level one coach, after giving up playing due to several serious injuries.
With an amalgamation of five, six and seven year olds ?Sports side looked like your average village team cobbled together with whoever they could find willing to play.
After a few months of friendly?s prior to September 2003, this young Duddon side were suffering heavy double figure defeats before a complete overhaul and new management team were brought in to build the side and take them, and the club, forward.
With players like Andrew Green, Stuart Neillands, Matthew Priestley and Calum Pether introduced to the squad, things were starting to take shape. After a rigorous pre-season programme the side were ready to start their first ever season, away to Furness Rovers at Youth Fields.
A cagey affair with lots of miss?kicks, hand balls, foul throws and other comedy events saw the eventual score line finish 0-0 (yes, a result . . . AWAY to FURNESS ROVERS! ? who?d have thought that?!)
From that wet and windy day in September 2003 when Ben Shirley?s barmy army got their first ever result, the squad has gone from strength to strength. One of the biggest highlights of the early seasons was during the under ten?s campaign when a spirited Duddon side went to Furness Rovers again and won a magnificent spectacle by two goals to one, fitting that it was Pether and Neillands who scored the Duddon goals.
The managers philosophy has always been to attract good players and make them into excellent team players. Over the years players have come and gone, like James Hanson, Oliver Maguire, Laurence Burnside,Adam Casson (1st Barrow player)and others but only twice has a player ever left the side to play for another club.
Loyalty is a key part of this squad and a strong sense of team spirit. The manager is loyal to the players and the players are loyal to the manager and each other. No one is bigger than the club or team.
As the years went by the squad began to grow and players, supporters and management alike scoured the village for new recruits to see us into the dizzy heights of eleven a side youth football.
It was clear that Duddon were building something special and certainly sustainable and recruiting players proved to be relatively easy in the end.
After two runners up medals in the league (a first for the club), a runners up medal in the club?s first ever appearance in a cup final and four gala successes, this squad of players is the most successful team Duddon Sports JFC has ever produced.
