Mark Casson
Name: Mark Casson
Age:
Position: Assistant manager
Date Joined: 01/05/2008
Previous club(s): Holker Old Boys

BIOGRAPHY
Mark Casson joined the club in May 2008. He was 'recruited' because we wanted his son, Adam, to come and play for us . . .

Anyway, Mark is the former manager of one our close rivals, Holker Old Boys, and we've enjoyed many a duel in times gone by (Ben Shirley's Duddon usually getting one over on Holker, of course . . .) particularly memorable was the 5-0 victory to Duddon in September 2006. The less said about Mark's revenge in Holker's cup win over 'Sports later that season the better. . . no sour grapes on our part, of course.

Despite Mark's history with Holker (which as you can tell, we don't hold against him) he has earned the respect of our players, prompting one of them to state "you know what Ben, Mark (Casson) is the best assistant manager we've ever had". Coming from one of the lads, what more can you say. They are a difficult bunch to win over and it takes time to earn their respect and Mark has certainly worked hard to do that.

Joking aside, Mark is clearly committed to Duddon Sports and is a fantastic assistant manager to Ben Shirley and you can see that they make a great management team.

One particular moment of interest from the 2008/09 season, was when Mark delivered a half time team talk when we were 5-0 up to Duddon Villa away. Mark's motivational technique was to act like a five year old and whack the wall of the dressing room that the opposition were changing in and shout through it "we're gonna beat you!" and " Come on lets get the 2nd half on!" - along with sixteen other five. . .I mean twelve year old lads doing the same.

Mark has been pivotal in bringing in quality players to the club and offering sound advice to the manager on our system of play, formation, set plays and tactical approach. His only down side is that he prefers zonal marking which is rather like the Spanish waiter that manages Liverpool FC.

Mark shares the goal at this club of producing good quality players that play attractive football as a team. With this goal in mind he is committed to working as hard as he possibly can to winning more trophies next season.

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
