Played at Holker St, home of Barrow AFC.
Duddon Sports U14 emerged as winners of the Barrow & District JFL U14 Knockout Cup with a hard fought 5-2 win over Barrow Wanderers at Holker St on Sunday 25th April. ‘Sports Captain, Andrew Green, was the hero for Duddon with two cracking long range, trademark strikes.
Barrow Wanderers nearly opened the scoring with a great run by frontman Jordan Wallace but a superbly timed challenge from Connor Rowlings in the Duddon penalty box cleared the danger.
After 10 minutes, Duddon opened the scoring as Green hit a fierce 25 yard strike which hit the back of the net before ‘keeper Alex Mason could move.
A great run and cross from David Jackson set up the ever dangerous Wanderers striker, Wallace, who's first time shot produced a fantastic one handed diving save by Duddon keeper Jordan Woodend. A great spell of pressure by the Duddon players produced four corners on the bounce with the last one proving fruitful as the ball was met with a deft glancing header by Christian Sloan finding the back of the net for a 2-0 half time lead to Duddon.
Shortly after the re-start, the lead was increased to 3-0 as Chris Houghton broke from left back and played the ball to Jordan Thompson. The energetic midfielder swept a brilliant crossfield ball to Sloan who found Declan Thorpe in the box. Thorpe’s brilliant flick fell into the path of Green, who volleyed in from the edge of the box to round of a really well worked goal.
Wanderers weren't dead and buried though and two goals in quick succession by Jordan Wallace, the first a spectacular looping shot from 30 yards and the second an instant shot from the edge of the box, brought Wanderers back into the game.
Duddon were not to be denied the cup though and soon restored a two goal cushion as a long ball from their defence found Declan Thorpe, his instant turn leaving him in on goal and he cooly slotted past the Wanderers keeper to finish well. Wanderers almost replied immediately as a great 30yds strike from Stefan went inches wide of the Duddon post. A long ball in by the impressive Green led to Duddon’s 5th goal as a half clearance by the Wanderers defence fell to Nathan Watters who smashed the volley into the back of the net.
Duddon emerged as the Under 14’s KO Cup Winners, to complete a league and cup double. Wanderers were out to cause an upset and were unfortunate not to do so. A great contest between two very good sides. Next up for Duddon, is the Furness FA cup final against Furness Rovers at Holker Street on Sunday (2pm kick off).
